GARREG LWYD

A classic Welsh mountain - barren and stark with a lonely plateau for a summit - Garreg Lwyd is close to the high road that crosses The Black Mountain from north to south, making it an easy peak to reach. Theres a car park at the foot of the mountain, and a path leads half way up but then disappears on the steep boulder-strewn upper slopes. Despite having to climb very carefully over this mass of shattered rocks, I was up and down in 22 minutes, making this one of the easiest of my 40 summits (still, makes up for some like Garreg Las that took an hour and a half).

The summit is a broad plain littered with boulders - no hint of a path - in mist you'd be hard put to find the cairn and trig, despite the fact that the cairn is the size of my house (well, its big anyway).

A view across the top of Carreg Lwyd - you can just see the trig to the right of the massive cairn.
